FLORES AND FLORES WIN “CHICAGO STYLE”
(Navy Pier, Chicago, IL) More than 4,300 gymnasts from 30 states and four countries competed at the IGI “Chicago Style” meet last weekend, but it was two sisters from Traverse City who brought home gold medals for first place all-around in their respective divisions.
Level 6 gymnast Olivia Flores captured 1st place on bars and floor and placed 3rd on beam and 4th on vault to give her an all-around 1st place finish with a score of 37.25. Second behind her on the podium was Rachel Ovalle, also on the YMCA’s Level 6 team. Ovalle won vault with a score of 9.45, took second behind Flores on bars, and placed in the top 10 on beam and floor to round out her scoring.
With Kayla Jackson’s solid 5th place all-around finish (2nd place on vault and beam), and top five scores from Samantha Neddo on bars and floor, the YMCA’s Level 6 team finished in 6th place all-around.
At Level 7, Francie Flores matched sister Olivia’s 1st place finishes on bars and floor, and scored a 9.625 vault for 2nd place in that event. Flores also turned in a 4th place beam routine en route to her Level 7 all-around 1st place championship performance with a score of 38.025.
“For two girls from our Y team to bring home all-around gold medals from the biggest meet in the world on an international stage is quite a feat,” said YMCA gymnastics director Betsy Van Deinse, “but it’s even more special that they’re sisters.” Van Deinse added, “And we’ll be an even stronger team when we get the other sisters back,” referring to twins Amy and Patricia Davis, both sidelined with injuries for the Chicago meet.
The YMCA’s Level 7 team placed 6th all-around, thanks to Annie Gerstner’s 2nd place all-around finish behind Flores, and a near medal sweep by Kendra Benak. Gerstner cemented her position as one of the top vaulters in the country with a 9.7 1st place performance, and then finished 3rd on floor, 4th on bars, and in 6th place on beam.
Led by Gerstner, the Level 7 gymnasts won 1st place as a team on vault with a 28.85 combined score. The team’s combined score of 28.275 was good enough for 2nd place on floor, and a bars combined score of 28.525 earned them 3rd place as a team on that event.
Benak began the meet with three falls on beam, but did not let that affect her other events as she bounced back to take 1st on vault, 1st on bars, and 1st on floor.
“We were so proud of the way Kendra got determined and focused after a bad start,” said coach Jennifer Van Deinse. “Some girls would have just given up after that, but Kendra really turned it on.” Benak finished in 5th place all-around behind Flores and Gerstner.
Five gymnasts also competed for the YMCA team at Chicago at Level 5. Jade Turner place 3rd all-around behind a 2nd place performance on beam and a 3rd place finish on floor. Annemarie Jenkins and Kayla Brady each placed 7th all-around in their respective age groups, Darby Drake placed 12th, and Sierra Klein’s strong 4th place bars routine and 16th place all-around helped the YMCA Level 5 team take 12th place all-around.
The YMCA gymnasts next compete in Rochester, Michigan, March 4 – 6.

Y Campaign Donor issues Challenge!
The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA New YMCA Capital Campaign received an anonymous gift this month for $250,000.
A long-time supporter of the Grand Traverse YMCA and the New YMCA project is challenging new donors to contribute an additional $500,000 in a “$2 donation: $1 match” challenge.
“This kind of giving is remarkable in so many ways,” according to Henry Peet, New Y Campaign Chairperson. “The gift in and of itself is incredible and provides momentum to get us closer to building the New Y. Second, by creating a challenge, this gift will not only inspire others to give but will secure another half million dollars in gifts toward our goal.”
New gifts and pledges received until the end of 2011 will be counted toward this challenge.
“We are fortunate to already have approximately 325 donors give nearly $5.9 million to build the New Y,” said YMCA CEO Tom Van Deinse. “People have given gifts from $25 to $1.7 million with some 11 philanthropists giving over $100,000 each.”
“The plans are in place and we are ready to go. Once we get the balance of the donations we will be able to open the New Y in 12 months,” noted Van Deinse. “We just need the additional $6.1 million in donations. Every gift, regardless of the size, gets us ever closer to meeting the campaign goal and building the facility.”
Utilizing donations already received, the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA has constructed two athletic fields on the property in 2009. These fields will be used for lacrosse, soccer, and YMCA Pop Warner football. One hundred parking places were created to support traffic. “We built the fields because our Y programs needed them now. Soccer and football practice took place last fall on the fields. Isn’t it great that the first activity at the New Y was 5th and 6th graders playing soccer?” noted Barb Beckett, YMCA Sports Program Director. “Our region deserves a New YMCA!”
The New Y Essential Phase will feature a pool, six indoor tennis courts, fitness area, indoor/outdoor aerobics studios, outdoor tennis and pickleball courts, chapel, a child watch center, and enough supporting locker rooms, administrative, and lobby space to serve 35,000 program users in the region. It is located on 20 acres at the old Oleson buffalo farm site on Silver Lake Road in Garfield Township and will be over 100,000 sq.ft.
“I get asked daily, ‘When are you going to build the New Y?’” said Dave Eitland, Y Director of Development. The answer is simple – “When we raise the funds.” Plans are finalized, the fields and parks are already in place, and all we need is donations to erect the building. It will only be through the extraordinary donations from many people throughout the Grand Traverse region that we will raise the additional donations needed and be able to start building in 2011.”
Donations to the New Y Capital Campaign can be made through the Community Foundation on-line at www.4good4ever.org or calling Phil Ellis, Executive Director of the Community Foundation at 935-4066.
There is more information about the New Y Campaign at the YMCA’s website at www.gtbayymca.org .
YMCA Gymnasts Win Tulip City Invitational
The Level 5, Level 6, and Level 7 teams combined to bring home 23 gold medals, and the Y’s 23 “Fun Meet” competitors brought home all blue and red ribbons for high scores.
“We have one of the bigger fun meet teams in the state,” explained 17 year old coach Kelly Van Deinse, “and it’s a great feeder program for our competition teams.”
That theory was certainly proven true at the Tulip City meet. The Y’s Level 5 Team captured first place behind a gold medal all-around performance by Jade Turner, 2nd place all-around finishes by Darby Drake and Annemarie Jenkins, and 5th and 6th place all-around scores by Kayla Brady and Sierra Klein. Altogether, the Level 5 Team brought home seven gold medals.
The YMCA Level 6 Team also captured first place, led by 1st place all-around gymnasts Rachel Ovalle and Olivia Flores. Kayla Jackson placed 2nd all-around and Samantha Neddo took 3rd place all-around to help complete the victory for the YMCA team.
At Level 7, Kendra Benak won gold on bars and floor, Annie Gerstner won gold on beam and floor, Francie Flores won beam, and Patricia Davis won gold on vault, bars, and floor. Together, they collected a 2nd, 3rd, and two 4th place all-around finishes, good enough for a 2nd place team score of 110.47.
YMCA Fun Meet competitors include Annie Ponstein, Julia Tabaczka, Kora Voss, Ciarra Reicha, Ella Wendel, Malorie Hood, Hadley Hilner, Jordyn Fortier, Skylar Malocha, Jayden Rawlin, Sophia Thompson, Summer Bennetts, Anwyn Livengood, Carson Krecow, Lily Briggs, Hanna Stalmack, Ryan Zrimec, Amanda Sweeney, Seryna Javin, Olivia Galton, Meredith Gallagher, Marin Barrett, and Avery Wisniewski.
YMCA gymnasts next compete at the Chicago Style Meet at Navy Pier February 11 – 13, cited by the Guinness as the “world’s largest gymnastics meet”.
