Do you remember Y Camp?

By Dagny Monette
YMCA Director of Child Care, Families, and Camps

Ask almost anyone about their fondest childhood memories and they’ll probably mention something about summertime, adventure, and friends. If they were lucky enough to attend a summer camp, that’s what they’ll talk about!

One of the most memorable parts of childhood is that all-important summer break from school. It’s during this time that kids have the freedom to learn outside of the classroom, to grow more independent, to make connections with new friends, and to learn things that only come from experiences like canoeing down rivers, hiking through woods, and building tree forts.

Do you feel like those days are gone for today’s youth? Does it seem that children have lost the opportunity to experience these things? Wouldn’t it be great if that kind of summer experience was still available to all kids?

Well, it is! The YMCA still does summer day camp and what a wonderful opportunity it is for the kids in our community. Your children or grandchildren can still experience outdoor fun like you did when you were a child. The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA will once again provide 6 different camps for children from ages 3 ½ to grade 9 for 12 weeks this summer beginning on June 13th and going through September 2nd.

Our Summer Day Camp provides a setting where children will not only build lasting friendships but will also engage in programs based on the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Each camp incorporates team building activities, arts and crafts, field trips, and plenty of outdoor play into each theme-based week of camp. Some of the fun themes planned for this summer include, “Wacky Water Week” a crazy week of fun-filled water activities, “Y Olympics” an exciting week of friendly competition, and “YMCA’s Got Talent” a week that gives campers a chance to develop and show-off their talents culminating in a camp-wide talent show!

Those by-gone days of summer fun aren’t gone in Northern Michigan! They’re alive and well at the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA!

The thrill and excitement of summer camp takes place on the grounds of our main YMCA facility adjacent to the Boardman Nature Preserve. We have a 40 acre wooded area right along the river for a true outdoor camp experience. On top of our great facility, we have a top-notch staff and our program is licensed by the State of Michigan. We have what it takes to provide your child with a summer that will become one of his or her fondest childhood memories.

We have already begun enrolling students for this summer but it’s not too late to get your child in on the adventure. We are planning a Camp Registration Night on Friday May 6th at the Y facility on Racquet Club Drive. We will have pizza, games and activities for the whole family, our own huge bounce house, and an opportunity to learn more about our great camp program. Plus, if you enroll before May 27th, your campers registration fee will be waived.
