Registration now open for Summer Day Camp

Instead of spending the summer at home and indoors, the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA Summer Day Camp is encouraging parents to give their kids a chance to explore nature at the Y’s Day camp.

YMCA campers gain new experiences, develop essential social skills and create lifelong friendships, while enjoying camp adventures along the way.

Children and teens have camped at our Y since 1985. When at summer day camp, kids are given new responsibilities and they learn independence. As a result, they become more confident, open to trying new things and grow as individuals and as part of a group.

As a leading charity committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y works to help children and teens discover their full potential by providing opportunities to learn, grow and thrive amidst caring, supportive adults.

According to camping experts at the Y Summer Day Camp, there are five reasons why children and teens should experience summer camp:

• For Adventure: Summer camp is all about fun adventures in the outdoors. YMCA camps have a new adventure for every child and teen. Visit www.gtbayymca.org for details.

• For Experiences: Day camps are about learning outside of school, exploring and appreciating the outdoors, developing new skills, making friends and showing leadership.

• For Personal Growth: While being away from the routine back home, youth have a chance to develop confidence and independence by taking on new responsibilities and challenges.

• For New Friendships: Amidst the fun of camp games, songs, swimming, canoeing and talent shows, campers meet new friends.

• For Memories: Summer camp is an unforgettable experience that will give each camper memories that will last a lifetime.

The YMCA Summer Day Camp provides exciting and educational camp programming for children and teens, including:

• Traditional Y Day Camp for grades 1-6

• Sports Camp for grades 4-6

• K-Camp for kindergarten only

• Young Explorers for ages 3 ½ - 4 years

• Y Arts Camp for grades 4-6

• Y Leaders Club Camp for grades 7-9

Field trips and special guests will offer additional opportunities.

Our Y Summer Day Camp is located at the Y Main Facility at 3000 Racquet Club Dr. in Traverse City adjacent to 40-acre woods. The Young Explorers Camp takes place at our Y Early Childhood Center at 1100 Woodmere, Ste B, Traverse City.

To ensure that every child and teen has the chance to go to camp, the Y Summer Day Camp offers financial assistance to those in need.

A special registration night will be held at our Main Facility, on Friday, May 6 starting at 6 p.m. The registration fee will be waived for all those that register before May 27. All camp information is available on our website at www.gtbayymca.org or by calling 231-933-9622 or 231-421-3568.

YMCA Gymnasts Win Hartland All American Meet

4-3-2-1-FUN!
YMCA Gymnasts Win Hartland All American Meet

(Hartland, MI) – The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA girls gymnastics team brought back over 100 awards from the Hartland “All American” state qualifier meet this past weekend, including awards in nearly every division at every level.

FOUR – Jade Turner led the YMCA’s Level 5 team with a fourth place individual all- around finish, including a 9.225 fourth place beam routine, and a 9.25 third place vault.  Level 6 gymnast Samantha Neddo also placed fourth all-around in her division, bolstered by a 9.125 second place floor routine.

THREE – Turner’s fourth place individual score was part of a team effort that earned the Level 5 team a third place all-around team finish.  Sierra Klein’s third place vault and strong support from teammates Darby Drake, Kayla Brady, and Annemarie Jenkins helped the cause.  At Level 7, Francie Flores placed third all- around, thanks to a 9.55 second place vault and a 9.525 gold medal floor routine.

TWO – Kayla Jackson led the list of YMCA second place finishes with a 36.225 all- around bronze medal award.  In typical steady fashion, Jackson placed second on vault and bars and first on beam en route to her individual second place award.

ONE – Once again, Annie Gerstner and Kendra Benak led the YMCA’s Level 7 team to a first place gold medal with individual first place all-around scores.  Gerstner’s 9.65 first place vault was complemented by second place beam and floor routines, and a third place score on bars.  Benak’s first place individual all- around result came by way of first place finishes on bars and floor, a second place vault, and a third place beam routine.  As a team, the Level 7 gymnasts won vault and floor and placed third on bars and beam to earn them the all-around gold medal.

FUN – The YMCA’s 24 fun meet gymnasts (Level 3 – 4) also competed at Hartland, bringing home 96 awards in all.

The YMCA gymnasts next compete at the Olympia Gymnastics meet in Shelby Township April 8-10.  For more information about Y gymnastics, visit www.gtbayymca.org, or call Y Gymnastics supervisor Betsy Van Deinse at 929-2869.

Snow Day at the Y

Children enjoying a variety of activities at the Y Snow Day Camp.

The Bounce House is always a hit.

When the schools are closed for the day because of weather, the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA is not. The YMCA provides a day-camp atmosphere with trained staff for school aged children when TCAPS schools are closed.

The snow day program at the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA begins at 6:30 a.m. and ends at 6:00 p.m. It's meant to work with parents' schedules, especially for moms and dads who may not have anywhere else to turn on such short notice.

"I believe the parents are really, really excited, and so grateful that they have a place like this that's fun and safe and nurturing," said Katie Winslow, School’s Out Supervisor. “The YMCA is a place where they can come and feel comfortable in a values-based environment."

The registration fee for Y members is $16 for the day and non-members is $25. The Grand Traverse YMCA is located at 3000 Racquet Club Drive, off South Airport Road between Cass and Garfield in Traverse City, behind the Logan West offices. For more information, you can contact the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA at (231) 933-9622 or download a registration form at www.gtbayymca.org.

There still is time to come for the fun!

SUMMER CAMP DEVELOPS YOUTH’S POTENTIAL
Registration now open for Y Summer Day Camp

(Traverse City, MI) – Instead of spending the summer at home and in doors, the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA Summer Day Camp is encouraging parents to give their kids a chance to explore nature at the Y’s Day camp. YMCA campers gain new experiences, develop essential social skills and create lifelong friendships, while enjoying camp adventures along the way.

“Children and teens have camped at our Y since 1985.” says Dagny Monette, Y Director of Child Care, Camps, and Families. “When at summer day camp, kids are given new responsibilities and they learn independence. Y GYMNASTS WIN IN MOTOWN

(Rochester, MI) – Annie Gerstner, Kendra Benak, and Francie Flores combined to win nine level 7 gold medals at the 2011 Motown Madness gymnastics meet last weekend, vaulting the YMCA team to a first place title.

Gerstner recorded a 37.7 all-around score by placing first on vault (9.7), first on bars (9.475), and first on beam (9.25), and capturing third place on floor with a 9.275. Flores finished in second place behind teammate Gerstner in the all-around scoring with a 37.275, including a 9.45 floor routine.

The one-two finish for Gerstner and Flores reverses their standings from last month’s Chicago Style meet at Navy Pier, where Flores edged out Gerstner for the all-around gold medal.

Both Gerstner and Flores compete in the 12 & under age division.

In the 13 & older age division, Benak won gold on vault (9.5), bars (9.35), and floor (9.45). While a fall on beam kept her out of the standings on that event, her three wins were enough to capture the all-around gold medal with a score of 37.05.

The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA level 6 team placed third in the statewide meet behind second and third place all-around finishes, respectively, by Samantha Neddo and Kayla Jackson. Jackson placed second on vault and bars and third on beam and floor, while Neddo won gold for her bars routine, placed second on beam and floor, and finished third on vault. Rachel Ovalle’s second place 9.45 vault added just enough to earn the level 6 Y team a third place bronze all-around medal.

“We have a pretty deep team,” said coach Jennifer Van Deinse. “Annie (Gerstner), Kendra (Benak), and Francie (Flores) performed well, but we are fortunate to have big scorers right behind them in Kayla (Jackson), Sam (Neddo), and Rachel (Ovalle). When Olivia (Flores) and the Davis twins (Amy and Patricia) come back from their injuries, we’ll be even deeper, and we’ll need that depth at state.”

The level 5 gymnastics state meet will be held May 6 - 8 in Freeland, the level 6 gymnastics state meet will be held here in Traverse City April 29 – May 1, while the level 7 state meet is scheduled for May 13 – 15 in Kalamazoo.

The YMCA team has another wave of gymnasts right on the heels of the level 6 competitors, and they combined to win two second place all-around medals and three first place event medals for the Traverse City team.

Nine year old Jade Turner won beam and floor for a second place 36.375 all-around score, and Darby Drake won beam en route to her second place all-around finish in the 8 & under division. The other level 5 gymnasts include Annemarie Jenkins, Kayla Brady, and Sierra Klein.

The YMCA gymnasts compete next in Hartland, Michigan.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more about gymnastics, you can call Betsy Van Deinse at the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA at 231-929-2869 or their website at www.gtbayymca.org.
