Y Gymnasts Win National Meet
Turner,
Davis, Flores
Win National Meet
(Chicago, IL) – On the face of it,
the challenge was insurmountable. Over
4,000 gymnasts were on hand from 30 states plus Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico,
Bermuda, and New Zealand. It was confirmed
by Guinness as the “World’s Largest Invitation Gymnastics Meet”, and only a
venue as large as Chicago’s Navy Pier could accommodate the six full gyms
required to host the event.
To top it off, the Grand Traverse Bay
YMCA’s top two gymnasts, Kendra Benak and Annie Gerstner, were unable to
compete due illness.
YMCA veterans Amy Davis and Francie
Flores embraced the pressure, however, each winning gold medal all-around
awards in their respective Level 7 age divisions with identical scores of 37.4. “Amy and Francie competed against some great
gymnasts, but came out on top,” said coach Jennifer Van Deinse. “Those were great wins for both of them, but it
was Jade Turner who really had a break-out performance.”
10-year-old Turner rose to the
occasion with a 37.05 gold-medal all-around championship performance at Level
6, winning the meet by capturing the gold on vault with a score of 9.2 and beam
with a 9.55. “Jade was not intimidated
at all on this international stage,” said
Van Deinse. “She was solid on all
four events, and really earned her all-around gold.”
Altogether, the ten competing YMCA
gymnasts brought home 44 individual medals, including ten first-place gold
medals and three all-around championships.
“Those medal performances would be considered quite an accomplishment at
any meet,” added co-coach Gina Van Deinse, “but it’s especially meaningful at
the world’s largest gymnastics meet.
Still, we could have done better, and we’re going to get to work on that
right away this week.”
At Level 5 for the YMCA team, Ryan
Zrimec won 6th-place all-around with a score of 35.125, while Summer
Bennetts came in 10th-place all-around. Patricia Davis won bars with a score of 9.475,
en route to a 4th-place all-around finish at Level 7. Combined with sister Amy’s all-around gold
medal, including a first place 9.6 floor routine, and Flores’ all-around gold
medal bolstered by a 2nd-place 9.55 floor routine by Kayla Jackson,
the YMCA Level 7 team missed the all-around gold team award by only four tenths
of a point.
“We were happy the team came in 3rd-place,”
said Van Deinse. “At a meet of this
stature, any medal is phenomenal, but we’re going to work hard for that four
tenths next year to take the team gold.”
Also competing for the YMCA team were
Level 6 gymnasts Darby Drake, recording a gold medal beam routine and 5th
place all-around, and Kayla Brady, 4th place all-around in her age
division. Annemarie Jenkins placed 14th
all-around.
The next meet for the YMCA gymnasts
is the Tulip City Invitational to be held March 3 – 5 in Holland,
Michigan. For more information about
YMCA gymnastics, contact gym director Betsy Van Deinse at 929-2869 or visit www.gtbayymca.org to find meet photos and more
information.

Fun and Health - Youth WOW partnership
First published in Family First Monthly, February 2012
Fun and Health
The Youth Working on Wellness Program (Youth WOW) is a partnership of the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA and the Munson Medical Center (Traverse City). At the Y we are for Youth Development and Healthy Living.
Fun and Health
By Diane Roach, RD
Fun and health are mixed together all the time at the YMCA. A special program for overweight youth ages 10-17 years, Youth WOW (Working on Wellness) provides structured, fun exercise and reliable nutrition guidance for a healthy lifestyle.
During the 4 month program, Y fitness trainer, Rebecca Galsterer, leads Y Youth WOW participants each week with a wide variety of activities, including racquetball, pickle ball, tennis, and basketball. She also teaches them how to use fitness equipment and monitor their heart rates. They are excited to see their fitness levels improve during the 4 month program, and to feel their clothes fit looser. Judging by the smiles on kids’ faces at the end of the “work out” sessions, she seems to have a gift for working with each person. When complimented for her work, she always replies, “It’s so much fun!”
For nutrition guidance, participants meet as a group and individually with Munson Medical Center Registered Dietitian, Diane Roach. A non-diet approach is used which includes learning about hunger and fullness, balanced meals, portion sizes, behavior change tips, fiber, beverages, snacking, social eating, and eating cues. There are games and challenges along the way.
Pine Rest Counseling Center staff provide a behavioral health group session, and are available for further support, if needed.
If you’d like to learn more about the Youth WOW Program, go to www.gtbayymca.org or call 933-9622 YMCA or call Diane Roach, RD 935-8451.The next session begins May 9, with registration deadline April 27. Cost is $392 for a four-month program. This includes YMCA membership for the entire family. Current YMCA members pay $272 for four months. Scholarship assistance may be available.

Y Recieves 2% Grant from Tribe
The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA was deeply honored yesterday to receive a $10,000 grant for the New Y from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians through its 2% Grant Program.

| Tribal Council and Dusty Bear during presentation |
PESHAWBESTOWN,
MICHIGAN, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2011 –The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa &
Chippewa Indians is pleased to announce the distribution of $958,867.88 of
gaming revenue allocation to local units of government. The dollars have been allocated to 58 local
applicants as a part of the Tribe’s “2 percent allocation,” which takes place
twice per year.
Under
the terms of a consent decree settling Tribes
v. Engler (Case no. 1:90-CV-611, U.S. District Court, Western District
Michigan), the Grand Traverse Band allocates 2 percent of its video gaming
revenue to local units of government, as defined in the stipulation, no later
than 60 days after October 1st and March 31st of each
year. This payment schedule was modified
with the consent of the State of Michigan to July 31st and January
31st of each year because the fiscal year of the Grand Traverse
Band’s gaming operation is calendar-based.
Since
the 2 percent allocation began in 1994, the Grand Traverse Band has allocated
$28,195,952.44 to hundreds of local organizations.
“The
test for determining the distribution standards, as outlined in Tribes v. Engler are: “Each tribe shall determine which local unit
or units of government shall receive payments and the amounts thereof; provided
however, the guidelines governing the tribes in making said determinations
shall be based upon compensating said local units of government for
governmental services provided to the tribes and for impacts associated with
the existence and location of the tribal casino in its vicinity; and provided
further, however…each local unit of government shall receive no less than an
amount equivalent to its share of ad valorem property taxes…”
On
January 25, 2012, the Tribal Council voted to determine which organizations
would receive allocations. Of the 100
applications received, totaling $3,040,951.44 in requests, the Council awarded
58 applicants for a total of $958,867.88.
The
Grand Traverse Band will announce its first 2012 2 percent allocation in July.
It
is with great pleasure that the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa
Indians is able to provide all citizens of northern Michigan with these
services that are furnished solely by gaming revenues.

My February Resolutions
First published in the Grand Traverse Insider, Sunday, January 29. 2012
+++
by Tom Van
Deinse, CEO
Grand
Traverse Bay YMCA
My
February Resolutions
The
good news? I did not break my 2012
resolution to never procrastinate. The
bad news is that I put off my 2012 resolutions until today! So, better late than never, here are my
February resolutions:
I
resolve to take off this winter weight before spring.
I
know I’m not alone, but I know I’ll do it, too.
After all the holiday meals, I’ve finally resumed a better diet, and I’m
hitting more tennis balls and enjoying the sauna at the Y. Others are giving the Y treadmills a workout
or enjoying the greatly expanded menu of exercise classes.
As
the CEO of the Y, I resolve to help the rest of the community get healthier,
too.
That’s
why we’re hosting a smoking cessation class, offering a program called YMCA Youth
Working on Wellness (Y Youth WOW), and providing more opportunities to join the
Y with our financial assistance program and free joiner fee period through
Valentine’s Day.
I
resolve to share the Y story.
In
a recent membership campaign, we registered over 600 new YMCA members. How did we do it? We let the Y programs sell themselves. Some just wanted to lose weight, like me, and
some wanted to tone up. Others wanted to
enjoy year-round pickleball, tennis, or basketball. Still others were looking to take advantage
of the member discounts on popular programs like gymnastics, child care, YMCA
Pop Warner football, or lacrosse. At the
YMCA you and your family can get fit and have fun for less! It’s a great story that everyone should hear.
I
resolve to get the New Y open in 2013.
Of
course, the credit for the hard work of raising the funds goes to the
volunteers and community members. Rob and
Phyllis Foster, Dave and Beth Howard, and Jerry and Don Oleson teamed up with
nearly 900 donors to get us to the point where construction of the New Y can
begin this spring. Volunteers like Henry
Peet and Paul Schmuckal and scores of others will make my New Y resolution an
easy one to fulfill.
I
further resolve to offer anyone who missed the chance to support the New Y
before the end of 2011 the chance to support it now. You’ll be recognized as
part of this great community success story, no matter what size your gift. The New Y will be built on gifts ranging from
$5 to $2 million, validating that the YMCA’s focus on youth development,
healthy living, and social responsibility really is, as our mission states,
“for all”.
| Tom Van Deinse CEO, GT Bay YMCA |
My
final 2012 resolution is to complete my 2013 resolutions before December 31
this year… if I get around to it!
For
more information about YMCA programs or the New Y contact CEO Tom Van Deinse at

(Kalamazoo, MI) Each of the 13 Grand Traverse Bay YMCA gymnasts competing in the Snowfest Invitational State Qualifier in Kalamazoo this past weekend will be headed to their respective state meet later this spring. And they’ll be going for the gold.
“The
girls had a great meet,” said coach Jennifer Van Deinse. “It was one of the most consistent
performances we’ve seen at every level.”
Francie
Flores, Annie Gerstner, Patricia Davis and Kendra Benak each turned in
gold-medal all-around performances. At
level 8 Gerstner swept the gold by winning vault (9.450), bars (9.150), beam
(9.150), and floor (9.500) for a first-place all-around score of 37.600. Kendra Benak captured her first-place
all-around medal in the level 8 14&up division by winning bars and floor,
while placing second on vault and beam for a score of 36.850.
In
the level 7 12-13 year old division Francie Flores won bars and beam and placed
second on vault and floor for her gold-medal 37.600 all-around award. In the 14& up division of level 7 the
YMCA girls swept first through fourth place all-around awards. Olivia Flores placed fourth, Amy Davis took
third, including first place gold medals on vault (9.525) and floor (a stunning
9.650 routine), and Kayla Jackson placed second, less than a point short of
Patricia Davis’ all-around gold score of 37.600. Davis won vault (9.525), bars (9.250), and
beam (9.475), and placed second to twin sister Amy in the floor exercise.
“We
brought home 18 gold medals, including the level 7 first-place team award,”
commented coach Gina Van Deinse. The
level 6 team placed third.
“We
were especially proud of our level 5 girls,” added Van Deinse. “We had just moved Jordyn Fortier up to level
5 as the required third gymnast to fill out a team. Yet with a strong meet from teammates Summer
Bennetts and Ryan Zrimec, they were able to place third along with our level 6
team, even while competing against much bigger and much more experienced
teams.”
The
YMCA’s level 6 gymnasts include Darby Drake (third place all-around, including
a first-place bar routine), Annemarie Jenkins (fourth place all-around,
including a second-place bar routine), and Kayla Brady (seventh place
all-around).
Coach
Jennifer Van Deinse sees a successful future for the YMCA teams. “When the younger girls see the hard work in
practice pay off with 18 gold medals this weekend for the level 6, 7 and 8
girls, it really inspires them.”
She
adds, “But this is no time to rest on our laurels. There’s a lot of work yet to do if we’re
going to make a good showing when we get to state... not to mention our next
meet.”
The
next meet for the YMCA gymnasts is the world-renowned Chicago Style
Invitational, to be held at Navy Pier February 10 – 12.
